Awakening / Anamnesis

The recovery of a forgotten knowing — that what we call 'self' was always part of a greater whole.

Parallels
Buddhism
Bodhi

Awakening from the sleep of ignorance (avidya).

Platonism
Anamnesis

Learning as remembering (Meno, Phaedo).

Gnosticism
Gnosis

Direct knowing of the divine spark within.

Sufism
Fana / Baqa

Annihilation of the self in God, then subsistence.

Vedanta
Moksha / Self-realization

Recognition that Atman is Brahman.

Modern Psychology
Individuation

Jung: integration with the Self (capital S).

Convergence

What Buddhists call awakening, Plato called remembering, Gnostics called knowing, Sufis called annihilation, and Jung called individuation. The verbs differ; the geometry — the dissolution of the small self into a larger field — is the same.
